The Cat and the Mouse.

A big red cat lives in a house. The cat likes fish. He also likes to catch mice.

A little mouse lives in the kitchen of the house. It is afraid of the cat, but it is clever. It likes to play games in the garden. It can play many games: it can play tag with its friends, it can play hop-scotch and skip.

One day the cat sees the mouse in the garden. He wants to catch it, but the mouse can run too fast. The cat is sly. He says, "Let’s play, my little friend. Let’s play tag!” The clever mouse says, "Oh, no! I can’t run fast. Let’s play hide-and-seek”. "OK, let’s!” agrees the cat.

The cat is the first to hide. "One, two, three, four five, I must seek, and you must hide!” counts the mouse. The cat hides in a high tree, but the mouse sees well. "One, two – I see you. You are in the high tree, now come down and find me!”

Now the cat must close his eyes. The mouse must hide very well. It cannot climb the tree, it cannot hide behind the tree, it cannot hide in the grass – cats see well, cats hear well, cats smell well. But the mouse is really clever. It runs and hides in a small hole under the tree. The cat is at a loss – he cannot see the mouse, he cannot hear the mouse, he cannot smell the mouse! It is not in the tree. It is not under the tree. It is not behind the tree. It is nowhere at all!

The cat is angry. He cannot have his dinner now.

The mouse is happy. It is so good to know many games. It is so good to choose the right game in the right place at the right time.
